Ice cubes can absorb odors from uncovered food in the refrigerator or freezer.
Due to the freezing temperature inside the freezer, molecules remain frozen. As the evaporator heater gets going, though, it defrosts the frozen molecules and makes them susceptible to absorbing odors. When the defrost cycle stops the evaporator fan cuts in and blows cool air to the freezer and fresh food sections. If you have any open food containers, the cool air will pick up odors from it and circulate it throughout the whole refrigerator.
